The promotional products industry is mourning the sudden loss of Rob Watson, CEO of Vantage Apparel, who died unexpectedly at his home in New Jersey on Friday, August 21, 2026. He was 48 years old.
Watson was widely respected for his leadership, intelligence, warmth, and genuine commitment to helping others succeed. During a career spanning approximately two decades, he held influential positions at several leading companies, including MediaTree, ASI, Zing, Axis Promotions, and Vantage Apparel.
Born and raised in Virginia, Watson attended James Madison University in Harrisonburg, where he earned a degree in Public Relations, Advertising and Applied Communications. After beginning his professional life in the commercial cruise industry, he entered the promotional products business and quickly established himself as a thoughtful and capable leader.
At Vantage Apparel, Watson played a major role in the company’s growth and innovation. The company, a Counselor Top 40 supplier, recorded significant growth under his leadership, including a 16.5% increase in sales from 2024 to 2025. He was also instrumental in the launch of Swagee, Vantage’s print-on-demand platform designed to serve promotional products businesses and decorators.
Beyond his professional achievements, Watson was remembered most for the relationships he built. Vantage president and executive chairman Ira Neaman described him as someone who made everyone he encountered feel valued. He praised Watson’s curiosity, ability to listen, intelligence, humor, and warmth, saying his absence would be deeply felt throughout the company and the wider industry.
Others who worked with Watson shared similar memories. Stephanie Cohn Schaeffer recalled his time at ASI and said he genuinely cared about colleagues and customers. She described him as a trusted mentor and connector who understood the changing relationship between print and promotional products.
Industry leaders also remembered Watson as a friend and mentor. BAMKO president Jake Himelstein said Watson possessed an unusual understanding of the industry because he had experienced it from multiple perspectives. He praised Watson’s passion, intelligence, calm leadership, and dedication to helping people grow.
Spector & Co. president Samantha Kates described Watson as bold, courageous, brilliant, and confident. Their professional relationship developed into a meaningful friendship, and she remembered their conversations as both insightful and enjoyable.
Goldstar global head Heather Smartt expressed similar grief, recalling Watson’s generosity, wisdom, and willingness to make time for others. She remembered him not simply as a respected industry leader but as a close friend who shared her interests and valued their conversations.
Watson is survived by his sister, Jennifer Watson Waller and her husband, Marcus; his beloved nephews, Jayden and Jordan; and his cherished dogs, Bentley and Dalton. His parents preceded him in death.
Funeral and celebration-of-life arrangements are expected to be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Rob Watson’s name to Clean Ocean Action.
As colleagues, friends, competitors, and members of the promotional products community remember him, Watson’s legacy extends far beyond his professional accomplishments. He leaves behind a reputation for kindness, mentorship, innovation, and authentic human connection. His life was far too short, but the impact he made on the people and industry around him will continue to be remembered.
